Reclaiming Narratives
Black History Month takes place every October, having been celebrated for the first time in February 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. This month stands as a beacon of recognition for the countless contributions and rich heritage of Black individuals throughout history. The theme for Black History Month 2024 is Reclaiming Narratives, emphasising the importance of acknowledging and amending the narratives of Black History and Culture.
Shifting perspectives
This amazing theme shines some light on the untold stories, the unsung heroes, and the everyday individuals who have made an incredible impact on black communities. This is supposed to generate a shift in how people celebrate and view black history and culture and also correct the inaccuracies, ensuring that Black voices are heard and honoured. By amplifying authentic voices, we ensure the richness and diversity of Black experiences are rightfully acknowledged and celebrated.
Inspiring future generations
This year’s theme takes a leap beyond its traditional focus on slavery and civil rights as it celebrates exceptional achievements across all sectors – arts, sciences, politics, or everyday life. It also represents a stepping stone for educators and community leaders working to foster a stimulating environment for young minds.
This journey isn’t just about being aware of the past, but actively working towards a future that sees, respects, and values everyone equally.
